A Grand Job For the Royal Canal

October 2007

Begnagh Bridge

The Begnagh vertical lift bridge replaces the old ‘Stone Arch Bridge’ across the Royal Canal, connecting the villages of Killashee and Clondra in County Longford, Ireland.

The project for Waterways Ireland has been constructed as part of a restoration scheme to re-open the canal, after it was abandoned in 1961.

Primary Fluid Power have designed, manufactured and installed the hydraulic system to lift the 130 tonne concrete deck.

Primary Fluid Power Ltd. were also responsible for the complete ‘Turn Key’ project to control the unmanned, fully automatic traffic system.

The old ‘Stone Arch Bridge’ now serves as an access road to the control building.
