The Rolling Bridge

The bridge curls up in an octagon and has been nicknamed 'The Hedgehog' or 'Scorpions Tail'. Whatever you want to call it, the design is very unique and a 'turning point' for hydraulics.

At its home in Paddington London, the bridge has attracted tourists from around the world, mesmerized by its majestic splendour.

Contemporary designer 'Thomas Heatherwick' dreamed up the unusual structure which stands in the waterside regeneration area of west London, but it was our team of engineers at Knowsley based Primary Fluid Power Ltd, who conjured up the technological wizardry to make the £250,000 bridge happen.

With a concoction of hydraulic rams and electronic controls, the sculpture unfolds with an unrivalled elegance.

Based in Knowsley for 30 years and employing more than 100 people, we have designed and manufactured the system which allows the bridge to curl up, transforming an Artists vision into reality.

Paddington is undergoing a transformation to turn it into one of the up-and-coming commercial and residential quarters in the capital.

The focal point of Paddington's renaissance is the Paddington Basin, a landmark development with offices, homes, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Mr Heatherwick studied at the Kingsway College London, Manchester Polytechnic, where he specialized in three dimensional design, and the Royal College of Art.

Some of his other recent projects are, 'Newcastle's Blue Carpet', 'Buddhist Temple', 'B of the Bang', and 'Guy's Approaches'.

Ironically the chance discovery of previously unknown notes in Isambard Kingdom Brunel's private workbooks, has led to the dramatic discovery and rescue of Brunel's first iron bridge, hidden within a modern brick road bridge over the Grand Union Canal near Paddington Station.

"The 'Rolling Bridge' is truly in good company"
